IX SCIENCE NOTES OF LESSON UNIT 1 MEASUREMENT

Class      : IX

Subject    : Science

Topic      : Unit 1 Measurement

Teaching Aids

chart, flashcards,

Vernier caliper,

screw gauge

Learning outcomes

1. Understand the fundamental and derived quantities and their units

2. know the characteristics of measuring instruments

3. use the Vernier caliper and screw gauge for small measurements

4. find the weight of an object using a spring balance

Introduction

make the students to understand that measurement is the basis of all important scientific study and its plays an important role in daily life also.

Explaining that it is defined as the determination of the size or magnitude of a quantity

Prior Knowledge

Make the students to recall the fundamental quantities and their units

Mind Map

Method of Teaching

1. quantities which cannot be expressed in terms of any other physical quantities are called fundamental quantity ex: length and mass

2. quantities which are expressed in terms of fundamental quantities are called derived quantity

3. A unit is the fundamental quantity with which unknown quantities are compared

4. To find the length or thickness of the smaller dimensions Vernier caliper and screw gauge are used

5. Astronomical units is the mean distance of the sun from the center of the Earth

6. Light year is the distance travelled by light in one year in vacuum

7. Least  count of screw gauge is 0.01mm

8. Least count of Vernier caliper is 0.01mm

9. Mass is the quantity of matter contained in a body

10. weight is the normal force exerted by the surface on the body to balance against gravitational pull on the object

11. Accuracy in measurement comes to a true value

Reinforcement Activity

make the students to do the activities given in the book

1. measuring diameter using Vernier caliper

2. measuring thickness using screw gauge

Misconception

we always refer mass of an object with the word weight. The teacher explains the difference between mass and weight in the scientific terms

Evaluation

LOT

Fill in the banks

1. Meter is the unit of -----

2. A physical balance measures small differences in mass up to----

3. Rulers, measuring tap and meter scales are used to measure---------

4. 1 k.g of rice is weighed by ------

MOT

1. Match

Length        - Kelvin

Mass          - Meter

Time          - Kilogram

Temperature   - Second

2. Write the need of a standard unit

3. How will you find the thickness of a one rupee coin

HOT

1. can you find the diameter of a thin wire of length 2 m using the ruler from your instrument box

2. find the mass of an object weighing 98N

Remedial Teaching

make the students to understand fundamental quantities and units using flash cards and also unit prefixes using matching boards

Follow up

make the students to write answers for the questions given in the book and make a model of a common balance
